We are seeking Youth Workers who are interested in a career opportunity getting paid to play sports and provide mentorship to male teenage youth who are wanting to navigate life successfully. Youth Workers participate in all activities, both sports and community services. Activities include football, basketball, hiking, running, and weight lifting.
Outside In began working with youth in 1985 by providing wilderness experiences that lasted anywhere from one weekend to several weeks. We once ran an expedition that lasted 90 consecutive days and included segments in Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Florida, and Mexico. This model features two foundational characteristics, the first of which is most obvious – activity-intensive group therapy in a wilderness setting. The second characteristic is less obvious yet quite important – a live-in staffing pattern.
Youth Workers live in at work from Wednesday to Wednesday every other week. They are there when the students go to sleep and they are there when the students wake up. They participate in everything the students participate in. They breathe the same air, eat the same food, endure the same hardships, and share the same accomplishments. They get to know each student very well, and the students benefit from the consistency.
Obviously, this schedule is not for everyone. It can be very demanding and the time off is sometimes as difficult to manage as the time at work. Some appreciate the opportunity to engage a group of adolescents in a shared therapeutic living experience. Others love the large blocks of time off. If it’s a good match for you – great!
